Francesco Totti has revealed that he rejected an opportunity to return to Roma in a representative role connected to the club’s centenary celebrations.
The former captain has shared several previously unknown stories in his new autobiography, Oltre, including details about his relationship with Roma following his retirement.
Totti clarified that he has never held a face-to-face meeting with the Friedkin family, despite years of speculation about a potential return to the club.
“I received only one proposal through intermediaries,” Totti wrote. “It did not arrive during a face-to-face meeting with the Friedkins because that has never happened.”
“The proposal was to become an ambassador for Roma’s centenary. I declined the offer.”
Totti did not want a symbolic position
Totti explained that the proposed position did not provide the influence or decision-making power he would want from a potential role at Roma.
“I have never felt comfortable playing the part of a decorative figure who has to smile without making an impact and agree without being able to decide.”
His comments make his position clear: Totti would not be interested in returning to Roma merely as a ceremonial or promotional presence.
If the legendary number 10 eventually rejoins the club, he would want a meaningful position that allows him to participate in important decisions and contribute directly to Roma’s future.
No direct meeting with the Friedkins
The centenary celebrations could have provided an opportunity to rebuild the formal relationship between Totti and Roma.
However, the offer described in his autobiography was made through intermediaries rather than directly by Dan or Ryan Friedkin, and Totti decided that the proposed responsibilities were not suitable.
The revelation provides another insight into Totti’s life after retirement. He recently disclosed that Roma wanted him to present Paulo Dybala with the number 10 shirt when the Argentine arrived in the capital.
Totti also revealed that he considered returning to professional football with Genoa before deciding that representing another club would have felt like a betrayal of Roma.
For now, an official return to Trigoria remains uncertain. Totti’s latest comments indicate that any future agreement would need to offer more than a symbolic title.
