Manu Koné’s excellent run of form has continued during the international break, with new France coach Zinedine Zidane testing the Roma midfielder in a different tactical role.
Koné entered the international window after scoring the first brace of his professional career in Roma’s 2-2 draw against Inter. He then impressed in France’s 1-0 Nations League victory away to Turkey, earning public praise from Zidane after the match.
Zidane Praises Koné’s Balance Against Turkey
“Manu played very well,” Zidane said. “He isn’t accustomed to playing in that position. I wanted to see that side of his game and I have to say that he demonstrated excellent balance.”
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Zidane deployed Koné as the deepest player in his midfield. It was a significant tactical responsibility for the Roma midfielder, who has generally played in a more advanced position during his international career.
Koné had previously operated in front of the defence under Didier Deschamps on only one notable occasion. That performance came at San Siro, where he produced an impressive display and received widespread praise.
His performance in Turkey showed that he can again fulfil the role when required, using his physical strength, press resistance and ball-carrying ability to give France stability through the centre of the pitch.
Could Gasperini Give Koné a Similar Task at Roma?
Gian Piero Gasperini is unlikely to use Koné as a traditional holding midfielder because Roma normally operate with a two-man central unit. The Frenchman could nevertheless be asked to perform several of the same duties within that structure.
Koné’s ability to collect possession under pressure, escape opponents and cover large areas of the pitch allows him to influence both phases of the game. His recent attacking improvement has added another dimension to a midfielder already valued for his physical and technical qualities.
His double against Inter also continued Roma’s increased scoring contribution from midfield, with the Frenchman becoming the latest central player to benefit from Gasperini’s aggressive approach.

The challenge for Koné will now be to maintain this level when club football resumes. After demonstrating his attacking quality against Inter and his tactical discipline for France, the 25-year-old is showing that he can become an increasingly complete midfielder.
