Michael Kayode delivered an impressive performance for Italy against Turkey, scoring as Roberto Mancini’s side secured a 4-1 Nations League victory. The former Fiorentina defender’s career, however, could have taken a very different direction.
Roma reportedly came close to signing Kayode during the January 2025 transfer window before Brentford intervened and brought him to the Premier League.
Roma Submitted an Offer for Kayode
According to journalist Eleonora Trotta, speaking on her YouTube channel, then-sporting director Florent Ghisolfi held concrete discussions with Fiorentina over a possible transfer to Roma.
The Giallorossi reportedly submitted an official offer for the defender, who wanted greater playing time after finding himself behind Dodô in Fiorentina’s hierarchy.
Kayode was open to leaving Florence, giving Roma a realistic opportunity to complete the deal. Brentford ultimately moved decisively, overtook the Italian club and secured the promising full-back’s signature.
The failed transfer may now carry greater regret for Roma following Kayode’s development in England and his emergence with the Italian national team. Still only 22, he has established himself as one of Italy’s most promising wide defenders.
His goal and overall performance against Turkey offered another demonstration of the athleticism and attacking ability that initially attracted Roma.
