Manu Koné has added another layer of rivalry to France’s Nations League match against Italy by declaring his desire to defeat the Azzurri as a Roma player.
Speaking to the French national team’s official media channels, Koné anticipated plenty of jokes and friendly exchanges with his Italian teammates but insisted that victory at the Stade de France remains his priority.
Koné Ready for Friendly Rivalry With Roma Teammates
“As a Roma player, I want to win against Italy,” Koné said. “There will be plenty of jokes and teasing, but beyond that, I know this is an important match for the country and for the coach.
“We want to win. That is the most important thing.”
Koné could come up against Roma defender Gianluca Mancini, who has returned to Roberto Mancini’s squad after missing Italy’s 4-1 victory over Turkey.
The two players have already discussed the game at Trigoria, with Koné previously revealing that Mancini and Bryan Cristante repeatedly reminded him of its importance.
The France midfielder is also looking forward to playing at the Stade de France for the first time under Zinedine Zidane.
“I know it will be incredible to return to the Stade de France in this way,” he continued. “I hope we can win.”
Koné Would Take Akliouche Around Rome
Koné was also asked which France teammate he would choose to bring on a visit to the Italian capital.
His answer was Monaco attacking midfielder Maghnes Akliouche.
“Who would I take to visit Rome? Maghnes Akliouche,” Koné said. “He needs it. He needs to open up a little more.”
Koné has enjoyed an impressive start to the season with Roma and has quickly earned Zidane’s confidence with France. After performing as the deepest midfielder against Turkey, the 25-year-old could retain an important role against Italy.
France vs Italy kicks off at 20:45 CET at the Stade de France.
