The Italian Football Federation has been placed under special administration following a decision by the Italian National Olympic Committee.
CONI’s National Board unanimously approved the measure on Tuesday, appointing Giovanni Malagò as FIGC commissioner and tasking him with guiding the federation toward a new election.
The decision brings an end to the dispute surrounding Malagò’s registration status when he was elected FIGC president on June 22.
New FIGC Election Required by January 31
CONI has instructed Malagò to oversee the federation until a new Elective Assembly can be held. The election must take place no later than January 31, 2027, although reports suggest the process could be completed within 60 to 90 days.
Malagò is expected to stand again and could remain the leading candidate for the presidency.
The former CONI president won the June election with 68.58 percent of the vote, comfortably defeating Giancarlo Abete. Questions were subsequently raised over the legitimacy of the result because Malagò was not registered with the FIGC when the vote took place.
The irregularity created uncertainty around the federation’s leadership and produced conflicting legal interpretations before CONI intervened.
Under the agreed solution, Malagò moves from elected president to extraordinary commissioner while preparations are made for a new vote.
CONI Releases Official Statement
CONI confirmed the decision in an official statement published following the 1,177th meeting of its National Board.
“The 1,177th meeting of the CONI National Board was held this morning at 1pm at the Foro Italico in Rome,” the statement read.
“President Buonfiglio proposed to the Board that the Italian Football Federation be placed under special administration under Giovanni Malagò, so that new elections can be held no later than January 31, 2027.
“With no further matters to deliberate, the Board concluded its work at 1:15pm.”
The decision allows the FIGC to continue operating while the procedural issue surrounding Malagò’s original election is resolved through a new vote.
Malagò will now be responsible for calling the Elective Assembly and maintaining the federation’s stability during the transitional period.
