Gian Piero Gasperini and Paulo Dybala representing AS Roma

Gasperini: “Dybala Absolutely Had to Remain at Roma”

Gian Piero Gasperini has reflected on his first year at Roma and explained the collective effort that kept Paulo Dybala in the Italian capital.

Speaking to La Stampa from Castelnuovo Don Bosco, the Roma coach discussed the club’s progress, the principles behind his work and the importance of building a team capable of succeeding in both phases of the game.

Gasperini Reflects on His First Year at Roma

Gasperini described the current period positively but warned that Roma must continue working with the same determination to preserve their progress.

“This is a good period,” Gasperini said. “However, we know perfectly well that we must continue with consistency, always with great passion and determination.”

“Paths are never straight. There are always cycles—you go up and then you come down. It is precisely during those moments that you must have the strength to start again and continue believing.”

Roma have developed a clearer identity under Gasperini, combining an aggressive attacking approach with one of the strongest defensive records in Serie A.

Gasperini Explains the Secret Behind Roma’s Growth

Asked how he had given Roma greater personality as well as a new tactical identity, Gasperini credited the players, the club and the atmosphere surrounding the team.

“As in every situation, I believe the secret is working well and professionally,” he explained. “Then you need good players, excellent people, a strong club and an enthusiastic environment.”

“It is a little like working in the vineyards—you must have all these components available.”

Gasperini has frequently praised the willingness of Roma’s players to embrace his methods. He believes their enthusiasm and commitment have been fundamental to the progress made since his arrival.

Roma Must Be Able to Attack and Defend

Roma’s defensive organization has been one of the defining features of Gasperini’s tenure, but the coach does not believe success can be built through defending alone.

“It depends. Sometimes it comes down to the characteristics of the teams,” Gasperini said. “There are seasons in which attacking football prevails.”

“But in the end, when you compete at the highest level, the teams that are rewarded are those capable of both defending and attacking.”

That balance will become increasingly important as Roma attempt to compete across Serie A, the Champions League and Coppa Italia.

Gasperini: “Dybala Had to Stay”

Gasperini was also asked whether he personally convinced Dybala to reject a possible departure and remain with Roma.

“I certainly believed that Dybala, as a great champion, absolutely had to remain at Roma,” he said.

“However, the most important desire was his own, together with that of the club and the entire environment.”

Dybala ultimately committed his future to Roma and has since enjoyed a strong start to the season under Gasperini. The coach has repeatedly highlighted the Argentine’s improved physical condition, enthusiasm and ability to make the difference when fully fit.

His decision to stay represented more than a technical boost for Roma. It also reinforced the unity between the player, the club and the supporters as the Giallorossi entered an important season ahead of their centenary.
