Santiago Castro with the Argentina national team during Lionel Messi’s farewell

Santiago Castro Reflects on Lionel Messi’s Argentina Farewell

Santiago Castro has described the emotion of sharing Lionel Messi’s final Argentina appearance before returning to Roma.

Speaking to TNT Sports before leaving Argentina, the young striker reflected on Messi’s message to the squad, his latest international experience and the work required to remain part of Lionel Scaloni’s plans.

Messi’s Message Before His Final Argentina Match

Castro revealed that Messi encouraged his teammates to embrace the occasion without losing sight of their responsibility to win.

“Messi told us that we had to enjoy his final match, but the objective was to win out of respect for the supporters who were there because friendly matches do not exist,” Castro said. “That is the essence of the national team.”

For Castro, sharing the experience with one of football’s greatest players was a moment that will take time to fully process.

“I will never completely realize what I experienced,” he admitted. “I have a couple of photos that I looked at throughout the night, and I will continue looking at them over the next few days.

“I enjoyed the days alongside Messi and I am very happy. He is one of the group like everybody else and wants us to treat him like anyone else. Once you get to know him, you understand what kind of person he is.”

Castro Determined to Earn More Argentina Opportunities

Castro also made clear that representing Argentina remains one of the greatest ambitions of his career. However, the forward understands that his performances at club level will determine whether he continues to receive opportunities.

“Getting here is the greatest achievement,” Castro explained. “I always want to be here and make my contribution, but to do that I must work hard with Roma. Representing Argentina is a source of pride.”

The striker featured for only 21 minutes during the international break, meaning he should return to Trigoria with a relatively manageable physical workload ahead of Roma’s Serie A match against Como.

Scaloni Calls on Argentina’s Young Players to Step Forward

Castro also discussed the message delivered by Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni as the national team prepares to move into a new era.

“The same things that were said during the press conference also emerged within the squad,” Castro said. “We now face another period of transition, and we must be ready, take a step forward and follow the example set by the more experienced players. The veterans helped us younger players.”

Castro will now return his attention to Roma, where competition for attacking places remains intense. Consistent performances under Gian Piero Gasperini could help the striker establish himself in the capital—and secure further opportunities with Argentina.
