Roma will reintegrate Devis Vásquez into their Serie A squad following the injury suffered by Mile Svilar.
According to Manà Sport Roma and Marco Juric, the Colombian goalkeeper will serve as Pierluigi Gollini’s deputy while Svilar recovers from a stress fracture sustained in training.
Vásquez had fallen outside Gian Piero Gasperini’s technical plans, but Roma’s sudden shortage of available senior goalkeepers has led the club to reconsider his position.
Vásquez Available Only in Serie A
Roma can modify their domestic squad list to include Vásquez, allowing him to sit on the bench and provide cover for Gollini in Serie A.
The same solution is not available in Europe, however. Roma cannot amend their submitted UEFA squad list at this stage of the Champions League campaign, meaning Vásquez will be ineligible for the upcoming European fixtures.
He will therefore be available exclusively for domestic league matches during Svilar’s absence.
The situation leaves Gasperini requiring a different backup option when Roma host Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Gollini Takes Over From Svilar
Gasperini confirmed during his pre-match press conference that Gollini will replace Svilar, beginning with Sunday’s visit to Como.
Svilar is expected to miss at least one month after suffering a non-displaced stress fracture. Roma’s medical staff are also evaluating whether the goalkeeper requires a procedure to insert a screw, which could extend his absence until after the next international break.
Gollini will consequently receive his first sustained opportunity in the Roma goal. Gasperini publicly backed the Italian, recalling the period when the pair worked together at Atalanta and Gollini earned selection for the Italy squad.
Vásquez’s reintegration gives Roma experienced cover in Serie A while the club waits for Svilar to complete his recovery.
