Donyell Malen says Roma cannot wait to face Real Madrid at the Stadio Olimpico, describing the club’s return to Champions League football as the fulfilment of a major ambition.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the Dutch forward also revealed that he apologised to his teammates after his dismissal in Sunday’s goalless draw at Como.
Malen Excited for Roma’s Champions League Homecoming
For Malen, the opportunity to welcome Real Madrid to the Olimpico gives extra significance to an occasion he had been working towards since joining Roma.
“Playing in the Champions League with Roma is something special. I think that, when I arrived here last year, one of the main objectives was precisely to get back to playing in the Champions League,” he said.
“Now, being able to play our first home match against Real Madrid is truly special, and we are all looking forward to it.”
The encounter offers Roma a chance to test themselves against one of Europe’s most successful clubs, with José Mourinho returning to the Olimpico as the visiting coach.
“I Apologised in the Dressing Room”
Asked whether he felt a sense of responsibility for what happened at Como, Malen acknowledged the impact of his red card and explained how difficult it was to watch the remainder of the match.
“Certainly. After the match, I apologised in the dressing room. It was very stressful for me to follow the game from there,” he said.
“Tomorrow is a different match. I will do everything I can to help the team.”
Roma held on for a clean sheet despite playing from the 53rd minute with ten men. Malen has since received a one-match Serie A suspension, which will keep him out against Genoa but does not affect his availability for the Champions League fixture.
For the forward, Wednesday’s match provides an immediate opportunity to respond on the pitch and contribute to a European occasion he described as special for the entire squad.
