Francesco Totti believes Roma can challenge for the Scudetto under Gian Piero Gasperini, identifying the coach as the driving force behind the Giallorossi’s encouraging start.
Speaking at the presentation of the Panini album, the former captain also discussed the Champions League meeting with Real Madrid, José Mourinho’s return to the Olimpico and his admiration for Donyell Malen.
“Roma Can Give Inter a Hard Time”
Totti praised the entire team but reserved particular credit for Gasperini’s influence on the group.
“All of Roma are doing well, but Gasperini is the added value: he is building a great group that wants to win,” he said.
“Roma can compete for the Scudetto. Inter have an extra gear, but Roma can give them a hard time.”
His comments reflect growing confidence around a side that remains unbeaten this season, with the visit of Real Madrid providing another opportunity to assess its progress.
Totti Backs Roma to Compete With Real Madrid
While acknowledging the challenge posed by Madrid, Totti believes Roma can make the contest difficult for their visitors.
“They can compete, although they are facing Real, who are not the Real Madrid of our day, when they were truly Galácticos,” he explained.
“You always have to show respect. It is a difficult Champions League match for both teams. When you come to play at the Olimpico with 70,000 people, it isn’t easy.”
The former number 10 also backed supporters to give Mourinho a warm reception on his return to the capital.
“I think there will be a great welcome today. The coach gave so much to this city and this team. He reached two consecutive European finals, so this tribute is deserved.”
“I Would Have Loved to Play With Malen”
Asked whether any current Serie A player reminded him of himself, Totti responded with a joke.
“I can’t recall one,” he laughed.
The conversation then turned to Malen, with Totti imagining the prospect of playing alongside the Dutch forward.
“I would have liked to play with Malen, also because he is a fantastic player. Since arriving, he has performed at the highest level. We are talking about a top player, and I hope he continues like this.”
Praise for Chivu and a Brief Answer on a Roma Return
Totti also acknowledged Lazio’s strong form and praised Cristian Chivu’s work at Inter.
“Honestly, I didn’t expect it, but they are a team doing well, so hats off to them,” he said of Lazio.
“Chivu is a great coach and is proving that he is up to the task. Inter can go all the way in every competition and win the Champions League.”
On the national team, Totti called for patience with Roberto Mancini.
“Mancini’s national team made a good impression on me; things couldn’t have gone any worse. Let’s give him time. He is an excellent coach.”
Asked whether he would return to Roma himself, however, Totti’s answer was brief: “No.”
