Leonardo Balerdi has praised Gian Piero Gasperini’s passion and clarity, explaining that the Roma coach’s approach helps him take to the pitch with confidence.
Speaking to Sky Sport before Roma’s Champions League match against Slovan Bratislava, the Argentine discussed his versatility across the back three and the welcome he received from his compatriots in the squad.
Comfortable Across Roma’s Back Three
Selected in the centre of defence alongside Daniele Ghilardi and Mario Hermoso, Balerdi was asked about switching positions after playing on the right against Genoa.
“I feel good, I feel good. All our players are strong, and Ghilardi and Mario immediately understand what we have to do. I also feel very comfortable with Mancio and Ndicka.
“Tonight, this is the lineup. The coach changes things a lot, and we keep moving forward like this.”
His comments underline the understanding developing between Roma’s defenders as Gasperini rotates his options during a busy run of fixtures.
Gasperini’s Passion Makes the Difference
Balerdi was particularly positive about the coach’s methods and the certainty he provides to his players.
“He is an excellent coach who knows what he wants to do. I like his passion and the way he trains us.
“I think that is a strength, because then you feel so much confidence on the pitch, and that is very important to me.”
Roma’s Argentine Contingent Helped Him Settle
Balerdi also revealed that Paulo Dybala, Matías Soulé, Santiago Castro and Nahuel Molina helped make him feel welcome before he had even arrived.
“There are a lot of us, aren’t there? From the first day, before I arrived here, they wrote to me and said: ‘Come here, there are plenty of us,’ and they welcomed me wonderfully.
“I’m happy, I’m happy. But we know that, although there are five of us, we are one. We have to win and take Roma as high as possible. That is what we want to do.”
