Roma are reportedly monitoring Lisandro Martínez as uncertainty grows over the defender’s future at Manchester United.
According to Spanish newspaper AS the Argentine is among the defensive profiles being considered by the Giallorossi for next summer.
His contract is due to expire in June 2027, although United hold an option to extend it by a further year. The report suggests that option is unlikely to be exercised, potentially opening the door to a free transfer.
Martínez’s relationship with United reportedly strained
AS reports that relations between Martínez and Manchester United deteriorated following comments he made after a defeat to Atlético Madrid.
Although a subsequent discussion with Michael Carrick reportedly helped clarify the situation, the defender’s long-term future at Old Trafford remains uncertain.
The contractual situation could therefore become a significant factor in the coming months. If United do not activate the additional year and no new agreement is reached, Martínez could leave when his current deal expires.
Roma face competition from Spain and Serie A
Roma are not the only club reportedly following developments.
Barcelona and Atlético Madrid are both monitoring Martínez, while Inter and Como are also named among the Italian sides considering the defender.
Atlético’s interest is described as longstanding, with the possibility of signing the Argentine without a transfer fee making his situation particularly appealing.
For Roma, Martínez represents a potential option as the club assesses ways to strengthen Gian Piero Gasperini’s defensive department ahead of next season.
Contract decision could shape summer opportunity
The prospect of a free transfer remains conditional on how United handle Martínez’s contract.
An extension would change the picture, while allowing the existing deal to run down could increase competition for his signature.
For now, Roma are reportedly keeping the Argentine under consideration, with his future in Manchester set to determine whether a summer opportunity emerges.
