Marten de Roon speaking ahead of Manchester United against Roma

De Roon: “Gasperini is unique” as Roma target a big result at Old Trafford

Marten de Roon says Roma are growing in confidence and maturity as they prepare to face Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Speaking alongside Gian Piero Gasperini ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League match, the midfielder praised the coach’s methods, reflected on his move from Bergamo and described what the reception from Roma supporters has meant to him.

De Roon also acknowledged that Roma still have lessons to learn from their defeat to Real Madrid, but insisted the team will keep trying to impose its attacking football.

“The coach is unique”

Have you worked out why other coaches struggle to replicate what Gasperini does?

“The coach is unique. The way he coaches us tactically is above everyone else. I have enormous respect for him. It is fast football, designed to score lots of goals and play with tremendous intensity, and that has always made his teams very strong.”

Settling into life at Roma

How are you finding Roma after so many years in Bergamo?

“I’m doing well. When I arrived, I needed to regain my rhythm and fitness, and we sorted that out during the international break. The staff and the group welcomed me brilliantly. I knew I could still contribute, and I’m happy with how things are going.”

Following Atalanta’s path — preferably a little faster

Do you see this Roma following the path Atalanta took? Perhaps the journey could be shorter here…

“I hope it is shorter, otherwise I won’t be playing anymore! At Atalanta, we went on a fantastic journey, although it seemed that winning trophies was the only thing that mattered.

“Roma are playing well. The first year in the Champions League gives you matches at a very high level. We want to keep producing consistent performances, including in a magical stadium like Old Trafford.”

Lessons from the Real Madrid defeat

Do you see the personality in this Roma side to dominate wherever you play?

“Against Real Madrid, we lacked maturity, but we are growing. The way we approach teams and play makes for entertaining football. We always try to score rather than sit back.

“The important thing is to have that awareness as a team and defend better at certain moments. But we are growing.”

Cagliari applause meant something

Do you think you are on the right path to being “forgiven” by Roma supporters?

“I’m on the right path. Performances are always what count. But I was pleased to be applauded when I came off against Cagliari. What you do always shows what you are worth.”

Respect for United, ambition for Roma

You also played for Middlesbrough and faced Manchester United. What do you remember about those matches?

“I don’t remember that match particularly well. It was one of the strongest Manchester United teams, and I have great respect for them, in a fantastic stadium.

“They are a strong team, but we want to get a great result.”
