Daniele Adani praised Roma’s determination and described their dramatic comeback against Atalanta as an act of faith inspired by Gian Piero Gasperini.
Roma required something very different in their third Serie A match of the season.
After recording consecutive 4-0 victories over Fiorentina and Lecce, the Giallorossi were forced to chase the result against Atalanta at the Stadio Olimpico.
Éderson gave the visitors the lead shortly after halftime, but Mario Hermoso equalized in the 89th minute before Matías Soulé completed the turnaround in stoppage time.
The victory preserved Roma’s perfect start and moved Gasperini’s team level with Inter on nine points.
Adani highlights Roma’s relentless final attack
Speaking during La Domenica Sportiva on Rai 2, former Italian defender and current television analyst Daniele Adani emphasized the extraordinary intensity of Roma’s closing attack.
“Roma equalized in the 89th minute through Hermoso and then scored again less than three minutes later. During those minutes, they took four shots—one every 40 seconds—in September, during the third match of the season and in 35-degree heat.”
Roma refused to settle for a draw after Hermoso’s equalizer. Soulé and Santiago Castro both attempted to find the winner before the Argentine winger eventually beat Marco Carnesecchi in the 93rd minute.
The goal completed the dramatic 2-1 comeback against Atalanta and sent the Stadio Olimpico into celebration.
Adani: “Gasperini’s matches are acts of faith”
Adani believes Roma’s response reflected the mentality previously demonstrated by Gasperini’s Atalanta teams.
“Soulé, Dybala and Castro all had attempts before Matías scored. Gasperini’s Atalanta used to do this because his matches are acts of faith.
“It was not simply a football match—it was a piece of history, and then the Olimpico overwhelms you. Roma took 39 shots. It was an epic match.”
Roma recorded 39 attempts compared with Atalanta’s six, although only 10 of the Giallorossi’s shots were on target.
Carnesecchi produced several important saves and appeared capable of preserving Atalanta’s advantage. Castro also struck the post and crossbar after replacing Donyell Malen during the second half.
The volume of chances illustrated Roma’s territorial dominance, but it also highlighted a lack of efficiency that nearly cost the team points.
Gasperini’s substitutions sustain the pressure
Roma’s ability to maintain their intensity was heavily influenced by Gasperini’s five substitutions.
Soulé scored and provided the corner for Hermoso’s equalizer. Castro strengthened Roma’s presence inside the penalty area, while Nahuel Molina added greater attacking quality from the right.
Fresh defenders Daniele Ghilardi and Leonardo Balerdi also allowed Roma to maintain a high defensive line and immediately recover possession whenever Atalanta attempted to counterattack.
Our detailed analysis explains how Gasperini’s substitutions transformed Roma against Atalanta.
Adani’s “act of faith” description captures what separated Roma from previous versions of the team. The Giallorossi continued playing with aggression and conviction despite trailing until the closing minutes.
Roma prepare for Champions League return
Roma must now transfer that momentum into the Champions League.
Gasperini’s team will begin its European campaign away to Fenerbahçe on Thursday, September 10, with kickoff scheduled for 6:45 PM local time.
The Turkish side will be without suspended midfielder Mattéo Guendouzi, although Mason Greenwood remains available.
Roma will then return to Serie A action against Torino at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino on Monday, September 14.
The matches will provide another test of the squad’s quality and physical condition. However, after three victories, 10 goals and a memorable comeback, Roma enter their European opener with confidence growing throughout the team.
