Former Roma captain Alessandro Florenzi has praised Gian Piero Gasperini’s work and backed the Giallorossi to deliver an exciting Champions League campaign.
Roma are preparing to compete in Europe’s premier club competition for the first time in more than seven years. Ahead of the opening game, Florenzi discussed his expectations for Gasperini’s team during an interview with Sky Sport.
Florenzi expects an emotional Champions League return
Florenzi enjoyed several memorable European nights during his time at Roma and is now looking forward to following the club’s journey as a supporter.
“I certainly expect plenty of emotion—the kind I experienced on the pitch and hope to experience again as a fan,” Florenzi said. “Mister Gasperini has done a great job, and I expect many good things.”
Roma will begin their Champions League campaign against Fenerbahçe in Istanbul on Thursday, September 10.
Florenzi remains cautious about Roma’s Scudetto hopes
The Giallorossi have made an excellent start to the Serie A season, recording three consecutive victories and moving level with Inter at the top of the table.
Despite that encouraging form, Florenzi believes securing another Champions League qualification should remain Roma’s primary objective.
“I think that is the first objective: to qualify for the Champions League again,” he explained. “From there to saying certain words that are forbidden in Rome, there is still a long way to go. We’ll see where Roma are in the spring, when it is time to draw conclusions.”
Gasperini has also attempted to keep expectations under control, despite growing excitement surrounding Roma’s perfect start to the season.
Florenzi identifies Dybala as Roma’s difference-maker
When asked about Roma’s summer transfer business, Florenzi instead highlighted the importance of Paulo Dybala to the team.
“Based on how he has started, I would say Dybala,” Florenzi said. “When he is fit, he becomes a player from another category. I hope he can do well this year and continue as he has started. When he comes alive, Roma come alive.”
Dybala started Roma’s dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Atalanta and could play another important role when the Giallorossi return to the Champions League stage.
Florenzi predicts Barcelona to win the Champions League
Florenzi also discussed the leading contenders to win the competition. He described Paris Saint-Germain as one of the principal favorites but ultimately backed Barcelona to lift the trophy.
“It has been their primary objective since the president arrived and created this perfect machine, led by an extraordinary coach who changed the mentality of many people inside PSG,” Florenzi said.
“They will be one of the big favorites. For me, Barcelona will win it, because winning three times in a row would be truly extraordinary.”
