Former Roma striker Edin Dzeko celebrating a goal

Edin Dzeko Planning Special Farewell Match Featuring Former Roma Teammates

Edin Dzeko is reportedly considering a special farewell match in Sarajevo that would reunite him with former teammates from Roma and the other clubs he represented during his career.

The Bosnian striker could soon bring his playing career to an end after more than two decades in professional football.

Dzeko, who celebrated his 40th birthday on March 17, has not officially confirmed when he will retire. Plans are already being discussed in Bosnia, however, for an event honoring one of the country’s greatest-ever footballers.

Dzeko considering farewell match in Sarajevo

According to Bosnian outlet Reprezentacija.ba, Dzeko has long considered organizing a match featuring players from the clubs he represented throughout his career.

Former teammates from Roma, Manchester City, Inter, Fenerbahçe and Wolfsburg could all be invited to participate in the event.

The proposed match would reportedly be staged at the Grbavica Stadium in Sarajevo, where the south stand has recently undergone reconstruction.

Further organizational details, including the date and the players involved, have yet to be confirmed.

Former Roma teammates could participate

Dzeko represented Roma between 2015 and 2021, scoring 119 goals in 260 appearances across all competitions.

He won the Serie A Golden Boot in 2016/17 after scoring 29 league goals and played an integral role in Roma’s memorable run to the 2017/18 Champions League semi-finals.

The striker shared the dressing room with several players who remain at Roma, including Lorenzo Pellegrini, Bryan Cristante and Gianluca Mancini. Any of them could potentially be invited to participate, although no official list has been announced.

Dzeko also played alongside former captain Alessandro Florenzi during a significant part of his six-year spell in the Italian capital.

Separate Bosnia farewell scheduled for October

The proposed club-based exhibition would be separate from Dzeko’s farewell appearance for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

The veteran striker is expected to represent his country for the final time against Sweden in Zenica on October 2. The match will form part of the new UEFA Nations League campaign.

Dzeko is Bosnia’s record appearance holder and leading goalscorer, making his eventual farewell a historic moment for the national team.

His proposed event in Sarajevo would then offer supporters and former teammates another opportunity to celebrate an extraordinary career that included successful spells in Germany, England, Italy and Turkey.
