Francesco Totti speaking about Roma’s Serie A title ambitions

Francesco Totti Names Roma and Inter as Scudetto Contenders

Francesco Totti believes Roma should be considered among the leading Scudetto contenders following their perfect start to the Serie A season.

The Giallorossi have collected nine points from their opening three matches, joining Inter at the top of the table.

Speaking to Rai Sport during the presentation of the Maxima Roma basketball team, Totti identified the two early leaders as the primary candidates for the title—but stressed that it remains too early to draw firm conclusions.

Totti: “Roma and Inter are the candidates”

“Roma and Inter are the candidates for the title,” Totti said. “Let’s not say anything else and wait to see how the rest of the season develops. We’ll have a better idea after 10 or 15 matches.”

Roma began their campaign with consecutive 4-0 victories over Fiorentina and Lecce before producing a dramatic 2-1 comeback against Atalanta at the Stadio Olimpico.

Totti’s assessment follows similar comments from Fabio Capello, who recently identified Roma as Inter’s main Scudetto challengers.

The two sides will meet at the Olimpico on September 19 in a match that could provide an early indication of their respective title credentials.

Totti: “Roma are my skin”

Despite his new position as an advisor to the Maxima Roma basketball project, Totti made it clear that his connection with the football club remains unchanged.

“I will never put Roma aside—it is my skin,” the former captain said. “We’re up there, we’ve started well and I hope the team can continue performing at this level.”

Totti previously spent his entire senior playing career with Roma, scoring 307 goals across 786 appearances and becoming the most iconic figure in the club’s history.

Totti explains Maxima Roma decision

The former number 10 also rejected the suggestion that accepting a role outside Roma was motivated by disappointment at not being offered a position by the Giallorossi.

“Was this revenge against those who didn’t contact me? It wasn’t revenge,” he explained. “It was a project that excited me. I’m happy because, for me, sport comes before everything else.”

Totti recently joined Maxima Roma as an advisor to the ownership group. His responsibilities include helping the basketball organization develop its supporter base and community initiatives.
