Roma reportedly expect Francesco Totti to participate in the club’s centenary celebrations, although the parties have yet to agree on the nature of his role.
Roma will celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2027, making Totti’s involvement one of the most important questions surrounding the planned events.
The former captain addressed the subject on Tuesday and emphasized that his relationship with Roma does not depend on receiving an official position.
Totti: “Roma are my skin”
“There is no controversy. The centenary belongs to everyone,” Totti said.
“I am a Roma supporter, and I spent a quarter of a century at Trigoria. I think about myself and my supporters, just as they have always thought about me.”
“I will never put Roma aside—they are my skin. I will support the club together with my people.”
Totti spent his entire senior playing career with Roma, registering a club-record 786 appearances and scoring 307 goals before retiring in 2017.
He remains closely connected to the team and recently named Roma and Inter as Scudetto contenders.
Talks over Totti’s role remain stalled
According to La Repubblica, discussions between Totti and the Friedkin ownership were frequent at the beginning of 2026, with his return appearing close at one stage.
The negotiations later stalled due to differences concerning the financial terms, contract length and responsibilities attached to the proposed position.
Totti reportedly requested an operational role that would allow him to contribute directly to the club. The Friedkins instead offered him a position as Centenary Ambassador, focused primarily on representing Roma during its 100th-anniversary events.
Despite the disagreement, Roma are said to be confident that Totti will ultimately have a role in the celebrations. The final decision will be made by Dan and Ryan Friedkin.
Totti recently demonstrated his interest in an active sporting position by joining Maxima Roma’s basketball project as an advisor.
Even without an agreement, it is difficult to imagine Roma celebrating its first century without its record appearance holder and leading goalscorer playing a central part.
Totti has already made his position clear: whether officially involved or not, he intends to celebrate alongside the supporters.
