Lorenzo Pellegrini has completed his recovery from injury and could return to Roma’s squad for Thursday’s Champions League opener against Fenerbahçe.
Gian Piero Gasperini has received another important boost ahead of a demanding sequence of domestic and European fixtures.
Pellegrini is fully available again after overcoming the thigh problem that disrupted the beginning of his season. Although an immediate start is unlikely, the midfielder is now approaching his first appearance of the new campaign.
Pellegrini completes recovery from thigh injury
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Pellegrini has fully recovered from the rectus femoris injury in his right thigh.
The Roma number seven has been training with the rest of Gasperini’s squad for approximately one week and has gradually increased his workload.
Pellegrini’s return gives the coach another experienced and technically gifted option in the attacking midfield positions. He can operate between the lines, play behind the central striker or contribute from a slightly deeper role.
The Italian recently renewed his Roma contract after agreeing to remain part of the club’s experienced core.
Fenerbahçe call-up now possible
Roma are aiming to include Pellegrini in the travelling squad for their Champions League opener against Fenerbahçe on Thursday, September 10.
The match in Istanbul could therefore mark Pellegrini’s return to the matchday squad, although he may not yet be ready to play significant minutes.
Gasperini is expected to assess his condition during the final training sessions before deciding whether the midfielder will travel to Turkey.
Roma have included Pellegrini in their Champions League squad for the 2026/27 campaign, making him eligible to feature at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.
Torino match could provide Pellegrini’s season debut
Even if Pellegrini is called up against Fenerbahçe, his first appearance of the season may be delayed until Roma’s following Serie A fixture against Torino.
The Giallorossi will travel to Turin on Monday, September 14, giving Pellegrini several additional days to improve his conditioning and match fitness.
Gasperini previously suggested that Pellegrini would need time before making a full return, with the club determined to avoid unnecessary risks after his extended absence.
His recovery nevertheless arrives at an important stage of the season. Roma are preparing to balance their Serie A commitments with the return of Champions League football, making additional attacking depth increasingly valuable.
