Italy head coach Roberto Mancini has previewed his team’s UEFA Nations League opener against Belgium at the Stadio Olimpico.
The Azzurri will begin their campaign in Rome on Friday, September 25, with kickoff scheduled for 20:45 local time.
“It will be emotional, as it always is,” Mancini told Sky Sport. “We have enjoyed some wonderful moments at the Olimpico, and we hope to begin again with the right attitude tomorrow.”
Mancini urges Italy to respond after recent setbacks
Mancini also addressed the mood within the squad following Italy’s recent disappointing results.
“Football can also produce absurd defeats. You have to keep moving forward because there is always an opportunity to recover quickly and think about the future.”
The coach will hope that returning to the Olimpico can help inspire an immediate response as Italy begin the latest edition of the Nations League.
Kean and Pio Esposito could play together
Mancini believes Moise Kean and Francesco Pio Esposito possess the qualities required to form an attacking partnership.
“Kean and Pio Esposito can play together. The young players are ready and want to play. We hope to make the correct choices.”
The Italy coach also highlighted the versatility available to him in attack.
“Zaniolo, Kean and Cambiaghi are players who can operate in every attacking position.”
Alessandro Romano earns Mancini’s attention
During his press conference, Mancini discussed Alessandro Romano and explained why the midfielder was selected.
“I did not know Romano very well, but he impressed me during the opening match of the league season, and I wanted to see him.”
“I believe he can become important for the future of the national team. He plays quickly with his first touch, and Ranieri did well to recommend him.”
Mancini discusses Nicolò Tresoldi’s international future
Mancini also addressed the situation surrounding Nicolò Tresoldi, who remains eligible to represent both Italy and Germany.
“The player was immediately positive when we spoke to him, but he had already given his word to the German Under-21 team.”
“At the moment, he feels 50 percent Italian and 50 percent German. We hope that next time he feels 51 percent Italian.”
Tonali expected to be available
Mancini confirmed that he still has two selection decisions to make before the match, while offering a positive update on Sandro Tonali’s fitness.
“I still have two selection doubts to resolve.”
“Tonali has a minor issue, but he has not suffered any further setbacks and should be fine.”
