Roma have reportedly added PSV Eindhoven winger Ruben van Bommel to their list of potential attacking reinforcements ahead of the January transfer window.
Gian Piero Gasperini has wanted a right-footed left winger capable of beating defenders, moving into central areas and creating numerical superiority since the summer. Van Bommel fits that tactical profile and is now being monitored by Roma sporting director Tony D’Amico.
Roma Add Ruben van Bommel to Attacking Shortlist
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma scouts have been following Van Bommel’s development closely as the club prepares to reassess its attacking options in January.
The 22-year-old naturally operates from the left despite being right-footed. At 1.92 metres, he combines unusual size for a winger with acceleration, direct running and the ability to attack the penalty area.
Those characteristics could give Gasperini the different attacking option Roma failed to acquire before the summer deadline.
D’Amico acknowledged after the transfer window that Roma remained slightly short in attack. The club attempted to sign several wingers, including Luiz Henrique and Jamie Leweling, but neither operation was completed.
Roma continue to monitor Luiz Henrique as another possible January option, while Van Bommel now appears to have joined the shortlist.
Who Is Ruben van Bommel?
Van Bommel was born in 2004 and joined PSV from AZ Alkmaar in 2025 for approximately €15.8 million.
PSV’s investment demonstrated the club’s belief in his potential, and he remains under contract until June 2030. That long-term agreement means Roma would likely need to make a significant offer to persuade the Dutch champions to negotiate.
The winger is the son of former Milan and Bayern Munich midfielder Mark van Bommel, who is now the head coach of the Belgium national team. His maternal grandfather is Bert van Marwijk, who guided the Netherlands to the 2010 World Cup final.
Ruben has recently progressed into the senior Netherlands setup after recovering from the serious knee injury that interrupted his first season with PSV.
Why Van Bommel Fits Gasperini’s Roma
Roma’s interest is connected to a specific tactical need rather than simply adding another forward.
Gasperini wants an attacker who can begin on the left, isolate a defender and then drive inside onto his stronger right foot. Van Bommel’s direct style, physical profile and willingness to attack space make him an intriguing option.
His age also fits the Friedkin Group’s recent strategy of investing in players with development and resale potential. Roma used that approach when signing Santiago Castro, Rodrigo Mora and Konstantinos Koulierakis during the summer.
Van Bommel would not necessarily be Roma’s only January addition. Brazilian forward Endrick has also emerged as one of D’Amico’s priority targets, although the two players offer different qualities and could potentially fit within the same squad.
PSV Deal Could Be Difficult in January
Roma’s interest remains at the monitoring stage, with no offer or formal negotiation currently reported.
PSV invested heavily to sign Van Bommel and have him secured on a long-term contract. Convincing the Dutch club to sell an important player midway through the season could therefore be difficult and expensive.
Much will depend on Roma’s available budget, possible departures and PSV’s willingness to discuss a deal. The coming months will allow D’Amico and Gasperini to determine whether Van Bommel is a realistic January target or an option better pursued next summer.
