Manu Koné during a Roma match

Koné wants Sassuolo return but Roma remain cautious over recovery

Manu Koné wants to return against Sassuolo, but Roma are reluctant to rush the final stage of his recovery from a thigh injury.

The French midfielder is nearing a comeback after suffering a grade-one muscle injury against Real Madrid. With the international break approaching, however, Gasperini and the medical staff want to avoid a setback that could extend his absence.

Koné has only partially resumed training with the group and is not yet ready to play a full match. A place on the bench and a brief appearance remain possibilities, with a decision expected after today’s final training session.

France commitments complicate the decision

According to the reports, Koné is also keen to join France for their upcoming matches against Italy and Turkey.

An appearance against Sassuolo could strengthen his chances of an international call-up. Roma, though, would prefer to keep him at Trigoria during the break to complete his recovery rather than see him leave for another demanding spell.

The midfielder’s previous muscle problems are also a consideration. The club’s preference is to have him fully fit after the break, with Parma and Paris Saint-Germain among the fixtures ahead.

The latest assessment follows earlier reports of differing expectations over Koné’s availability for Sassuolo.

Roma weigh short-term help against a full recovery

Koné’s absence has increased the workload on Marten de Roon, Bryan Cristante and Niccolò Pisilli during a crowded run of fixtures. His return would give Gasperini an important option in a midfield that has had little room for rotation.

But Sassuolo is Roma’s last match before the international break. Waiting would give Koné additional time to rebuild his fitness before the next stretch of domestic and European games.

For now, the midfielder’s desire to play must be weighed against the medical assessment. Roma want him back, but the priority is making sure he can stay available once he returns.
